Moles occur when skin cells grow in a cluster

There are several types of skin moles, common moles, are also known as "Nevi". Just about everyone gets moles, so if you have some, you are not alone. Some of us are born with moles, some of us get them later in life. The question is, "Are moles a problem, are they cancerous?" Most often, no, they are not cancerous, but they can turn cancerous, so you have to keep track of your moles to insure they do not get out of hand.

If your baby is born with moles, they are called "Congenital Nevi". About one percent of babies are born with these congenital moles. The problem is, these congential moles are more likely to develop into melanoma, the most deadliest form of skin cancer. Once again, you should have congenital moles checked at least once per year to make sure they are not growing into melanoma skin cancer.

Some people have something called, "Dysplastic Nevi". These are the large type of moles that stick up off the skin. Usually dyplastic nevi are larger than a pencil eraser and they are not totally round.

Dyplastic moles tend to have uneven color with dark brown centers and lighter, uneven edges. Another strange characteristic of these moles is quanity. Most people with dysplastic nevi may have more than 100 moles on their bodies, and have a good chance of developing skin cancer. Any changes in a mole should be reported to your dermatologist as soon as they appear. For more details on dyplastic nevi, check out this cancer website featuring melanoma.

How Do You Know If Your Mole Is Cancerous? You have to check them out regularily. Dermatologists have developed a simple checklist for moles, it's called the ABCDE method. Warning: "If a mole displays any of the signs listed below, have it checked immediately by a dermatologist. It could be cancerous."

Asymmetry. One half of the mole does not match the other half.

Border. If the border or edges of your mole is ragged, blurred, or irregular, contact your doctor.

Color. If the color of your mole is not the same from one side to the other, or if the mole has shades of tan, or brown, black, blue, white, or red, contact your doctor.

Diameter. Size matters... If the diameter of your mole is larger than the eraser of a pencil, see your doctor.

Evolution. Have you noticed your mole change lately? Has it changed its size shape, or color? Have your doctor look at it!

What causes a mole to turn cancerous? The biggest risk factor is UV light. This "Ultraviolet light exposure," comes from too much sunlight. You can fight this by just adding a little sunscreen to your routine.

Another cause of skin cancer is the use of tanning booths. These UV tanning booths give you the same amount of sunlight, as if you were 10 miles up in the air tanning...Children are not allowed to use tanning booths, you shouldn't either.

You may also get skin cancer because of a poor immune system. In normal instances, your immune system protects the body from germs or dangerous substances. If your immune system is compromised by some disease, or if you have taken certain medications that were prescribed to you may cause your immune system to shut down, allowing the cancers to grow.

Another reason your mole might turn cancerous is too many X-Rays. Recent studies show over-exposure to x-rays can cause moles to grow in size, and change color. Try to avoid too many x-rays.

Finally, who's at risk? The Northern Europeans have the most problem with skin cancer. They have blonde or red hair, and blue or green eyes. Other people with high risk factors are those with genetic disorders such as albinism. You may also be at risk for skin cancer if one of you close family members has developed skin cancer.
